Willem Elsschot, 'Kaas', a graphic novel by Dick Matena Archive
From Saturday 29 March 2008 until Sunday 29 June 2008
KMSKA | Leopold De Waelplaats | 2000 Antwerp
Dick Matena transposed Willem Elsschot's Kaas (Cheese) into his familiar visual idiom for the Athenaeum - Polak & Van Gennep publishing company. Prior to this, he had, in his own inimitable way, already transformed Gerard Reve's De Avonden and Jan Wolkers' Kort Amerikaans into the form of graphic novels. The original drawings from De Avonden and Kort Amerikaans were exhibited for the first time at deBuren in 2006. Strip cartoons in their purest form; literature for the eyes.
Matena's drawings will be exhibited in the KMSKA as part of the Elsschot year. This is the first strip cartoon exhibition ever to be held in these hallowed surroundings. The exhibition will comprise 219 drawings.
Dick Matena is a Dutch strip cartoonist and scenarist. Although he is certainly no newcomer to the field, his work is innovative. He started working for Toonder Studios in 1960 and over the years his work has been nominated for many prizes, with great success. Such as in 2003 when he was awarded the Bronze Adhemar. Matena's work has been published in more than thirteen languages.
In collaboration with the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen.
With thanks to Athenaeum Publishers - Polak & Van Gennep.
