In the series of lectures ‘It's the economy, stupid!' renowned economists give surprising and sometimes controversial analyses of current affairs. In the run-up to the European Football Championships and the Olympic games, this time we pose the question: do the costs of these events outweigh their benefits? Italy's withdrawal of its candidacy for the host of the 2020 Olympic Games due the credit crunch is telling enough. A lecture by sports economist Stefan Kesenne (UA) on the economical impact of large-scale sporting events, followed by an interview by Piet Depuydt (De Tijd).
